Can 'social networks' on the Internet replace the traditional concept of family and friends?

NOPE..We all need family and friends!

Can 'social networks' on the Internet replace the traditional concept of family and friends?
YES
Reply:It already has.
Reply:No great as many online relationships are, nothing beats the ability to hug someone for real.
Reply:NO ......NOTHING can take the time and space in our lives like REAL companionship from family and friends can...but to many times we have none so we play on the internet...you sound depressed...in order to have a friend ..we must be one ..in order to have a family ..we must be a part of it..are you doing your part?
Reply:No, blood is thicker than water.
Reply:No, the hard reality is that the social networks that we maintain online are extensions of our own psyches and desires. We create the online realities that we have, and simply press delete when something gets uncompfortable.

Real life social interaction confronts us with the truth that realities external to ourselves exist, and that we are not perfect, or right all the time, or big and bad, or whatever. People will balance you out, and the more that you interact with real people, the less of a jerk you become, and the better you feel.

There is a definite hollowness to internet 'social networks'. The future of it is reinforcing real life, much like myspace tends to do.
