I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...

What's the best way to get a developer? Can you get 1 person who can program and design(do all)? Best way? Hire full time, university students, etc?

I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...
There are a million of them out there so try and really think why yours would be good enough to attract people away from facebook or myspace.

If you can't personally contribute anything to the project besides the idea it's going to be hard for you to get a group of people together at all. Learn to code yourself and then try and see if the idea is still worth it to you. If your idea is a good one you'll probably need at least 3 good programmers to build your site. The problem is, since you don't know how to program, you won't know who is a good programmer. That is what killed a lot of the tech startups in the bubble era.

So, in summary, learn to program for a month and see if you're still interested. No one is going to take a truly worthwhile idea in that time.

Good luck!
Reply:You can post your project at freelance website like http://ww.getafreelnacer.com/ and let many web designers bid for your project. You can then hire whoever you like.
Reply:Ask people on open source projects or web design project sites. Most are not going to do it for free and will charge quite a bit. You could always do what I did for my social site and it works great once you learn it. It is called Joomla. It is a community builder. Look it up. If you need help, let me know at my site below. Good luck

Reply:1. Do NOT get a one-person-does-all guy. It takes a lot to be a good designer and it takes a lot to be a good developer and it almost never happens that people are that good at both. Most of the great websites you see are made by 2 guys minimum and on a major site a team of 5 might not be enough.

2. University students are not good for big projects. I'm one of them and I'll say it right now. They can't put in the work you'll need and they tend not to have the skills necessary to get it done right. Most of the uni. students I've met wouldn't be up to the challenge. They need a good year or two of working before they're up for something like that. The only reason I can say that with such conviction is because I've had that year, I took a year off to freelance, and I learned more then than I did in my entire degree and other design classes.

3. If you're running this as a business then you should considered getting a design studio to do the initial creation and then start building your own group to take over to maintain and improve the site. Guys like FaceBook and MySpace will have an in-house team to take care of 99% of the stuff that goes on and then just farm out when they need the extra help.
