What are various sources of revenue for websites like orkut or Hi5. Many sites do not post even advertisements on their sites.
What is the source of revenue for social networking sites like Orkut ??
I took a very quick look at hi5 and I see Display advertising, so this would be a source of advertising.
As for Orkut, I *think* thats powered by Google. They may use this as a 'loss leader'. I.e. it provides little/no revenue, but if they gain a large fan base, their fan base may use Google for Searching, and the search will provide revenue through their Paid Search programs.
I know Facebook and Myspace also use a lot of display advertising. More so on myspace.

Am I the only person who thinks social networking is a bad idea?
I don't want to know what people I didn't like enough to keep in contact with are up to. I am more interested in meeting new people but think I might be the only one who feels like that. What do you guys think?
Am I the only person who thinks social networking is a bad idea?
If I am correct you are speaking about social networking sites such as Facebook or Myspace, etc.
I agree with you, I cannot stand social networking. There is already enough of ourselves laid out in this world via all the information we let out regarding ourselves every day.
I also agree that I don't want to know what people I don't like are doing. I don't want the possibility of being found on-line by someone who "just wants to know how I'm doing". If such a person did want to know we would have kept in touch.
Lastly, those I know who do the social networking thing are trying to hold on to a past that has long since abandoned them, be it high school or college and all those people they associated with in that time. Get on with life people, get on with life.
Reply:nope your not the only one. i think the whole thing is dodgy, what are the odds of meeting like minded genuine people on the net?!
Reply:You pays your money and you makes your choice!
Reply:I like meeting new people but you have to keep in contact with your old friends too.
Reply:no
Reply:yes
Reply:Well don`t keep them as friends then.
Reply:do you mean by internet? you don't have to accept people as friends, i don't have anyone in my contacts who i don't like enough to keep in contact with.

Which is the best & reliable site for social networking?
I need some good %26amp; reliable friends. Can you please suggest me the best website or some other method for this?
Which is the best %26amp; reliable site for social networking?
try orkut or myspace.
Both of them have millions of users, therefore a good chance that u may find someone interesting.
Reply:**Go for ORKUT( www.orkut.com ).It is the best social networking website and you have Google to back you up.
Orkut:
It is not available for free: It created a virtual scarcity and a real demand. A little new to all the economics experts. In social networking a virtual scarcity can create good demand, provided the right environments.
Word of mouth publicity: I never say an ad for orkut but I got more invitations than those spammy mortgage promotional mails.
Simplicity: It is very simple to use.
One shop for all concept: I am with batchmates.com and various other communities but orkut.com is a social platform for every activity. Orkut is a right platform for anyone interested in anything.
Really Good: It is really good with all 7ps of online marketing. You can really find some childhood friend by a simple search.
thank you ...have a good day....
Reply:It is not easy to have a best and reliable social networking site. By reliable, what do you mean? And what characteristics are you considering to make a site best? Orkut is pretty popular and catchy, as are many other social networking sites like Friendster, Myspace, and many more.

I would like to start a social networking website, where can I get software to support this?
1) You need to register a domain
2) You need to find a web hosting company
3) You need to hire a web designer/developer (Go to guru.com, you can get your work done for cheap)
4) You need to figure out what technologies you got to use for your site (ASP.net is the hottest right now)
5) You need to decide the layout, features of your site
6) You need to figure out the revenue model (where the money is going to come from)
7) You need to reachout to the right target audience by effectively marketing your site. (The best way is by using google adwords and adverising on Yahoo mail)
8) Finally, best of luck, I hope you succeed in this venture. If you need more advice, feel free to write to me.

I have had a similar problem myself. What I did was report them to the website and then blocked them from my site. That solved my problem. I have been told by others to just ignore them and they will go away. People like that just want to argue if you wont give in they will find a new victim.

I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...
What's the best way to get a developer? Can you get 1 person who can program and design(do all)? Best way? Hire full time, university students, etc?
I have an idea for a social networking website but know nothing about web development/programming/design...
There are a million of them out there so try and really think why yours would be good enough to attract people away from facebook or myspace.
If you can't personally contribute anything to the project besides the idea it's going to be hard for you to get a group of people together at all. Learn to code yourself and then try and see if the idea is still worth it to you. If your idea is a good one you'll probably need at least 3 good programmers to build your site. The problem is, since you don't know how to program, you won't know who is a good programmer. That is what killed a lot of the tech startups in the bubble era.
So, in summary, learn to program for a month and see if you're still interested. No one is going to take a truly worthwhile idea in that time.
Good luck!
Reply:You can post your project at freelance website like http://ww.getafreelnacer.com/ and let many web designers bid for your project. You can then hire whoever you like.
Reply:Ask people on open source projects or web design project sites. Most are not going to do it for free and will charge quite a bit. You could always do what I did for my social site and it works great once you learn it. It is called Joomla. It is a community builder. Look it up. If you need help, let me know at my site below. Good luck

Reply:1. Do NOT get a one-person-does-all guy. It takes a lot to be a good designer and it takes a lot to be a good developer and it almost never happens that people are that good at both. Most of the great websites you see are made by 2 guys minimum and on a major site a team of 5 might not be enough.
2. University students are not good for big projects. I'm one of them and I'll say it right now. They can't put in the work you'll need and they tend not to have the skills necessary to get it done right. Most of the uni. students I've met wouldn't be up to the challenge. They need a good year or two of working before they're up for something like that. The only reason I can say that with such conviction is because I've had that year, I took a year off to freelance, and I learned more then than I did in my entire degree and other design classes.
3. If you're running this as a business then you should considered getting a design studio to do the initial creation and then start building your own group to take over to maintain and improve the site. Guys like FaceBook and MySpace will have an in-house team to take care of 99% of the stuff that goes on and then just farm out when they need the extra help.

What do you want from a social networking site like Facebook?
I have friends who have a myspace and a facebook. They don't use their myspace, only their facebook. I like facebook as much as myspace because it's cleaner, not so much glam. It's nice, once-in-a-while to not have too scroll down someones whole page, take forever for it to come up sometimes, and not have to find a code to put in the comments...just put what you want to say.
Reply:I keep in contact with all my friends from HS that way.... Also... i meet new poeple when i go out on friday night and then 'friend' them in the morning, this way i have that persons contact information and dont need to waist time friday night asking where they live and there number and crap... it's amazing.

i find its useful for asking people in your class what the math homework was that day or just letting people know some more about you.
its only addictive for those who are gossip freaks
Reply:I like Facebook because it's like myspace but without the whiney emo teenyboppers and their glittery, gaudy pages. It's a myspace for adults, if you will. It's a great way to keep in touch with friends in different time zones or friends who are on opposing work schedules; and it's great for sharing photos with my family who live 4000 miles from here.
Reply:Actually that specific site is NOT addictive...now myspace on the other hand is addictive. There are so many people on it and being a promoter it is a great way to network. As far as my Facebook...I mostly talk to my cousin in Italy on it...
why is it so addictive?

It's a great way to keep in touch with friends in different time zones or friends who are on opposing work schedules; and it's great for sharing photos with my family who live 4000 miles from here.
Reply:Actually that specific site is NOT addictive...now myspace on the other hand is addictive. There are so many people on it and being a promoter it is a great way to network. As far as my Facebook...I mostly talk to my cousin in Italy on it...
What is the future of mobile social networking?
Is the market ready?
What is the future of mobile social networking?
I'm seeing where there will definitely be a GPS tracking capability in the future. So that you know exactly where your friends/family are at all times. I've heard this is already a feature on some phones.
And this might sound strange, but I'm seeing a way to search for people in your vicinity. So you could be in a mall and be able to search for a doctor and it could find someone nearby based on some profile they have connected to their phone.
It could even provide for a way to meet people around you based on internet dating style matches.
But hopefully this kinda stuff is a long time away.
Reply:as far market is concern the market is made ready but consumer is not ready for this social networking. because the thought of generating this is noble, but now so mant threats are also there which social problems.
as far future yes definately the future is really very bright.
Reply:the next big thing is maxwi it a city wide wifi it is in san fa already and it cool it covers the whole city in a wifi connect so any where you go you could get on the web

Do you think Myspace and other social networking websites unhealthy?
I'm under the impression they give people a false sense of security, not to mention they invade your privacy. For example, When your life really sucks, you may be in denial because you have an awesome myspace page... or, when you break up with someone, it takes you longer to forget about them because their essence is always at the click of a finger. Does anyone else miss the days of simply writing a good hand-written letter or using the telephone?
Do you think Myspace and other social networking websites unhealthy?
I think it's just another way to keep in touch with your friends and family. Sometimes it can be hard to do that when you live in different states. If you aren't comfortable myspace or other networking sites then don't use them.
Reply:I don't think they are unhealthy ?
Reply:you know even though i am basically in love with the myspace, i would have to say yes, because everything you said is right. The old days were better. but i mean i guess we cant go back to them. And we are just living in the new age. Rockin with it.
Reply:I would assume it depends on if the user has a healthy or unhealthy attitude. As with most things in life, it is what you make it. As for invading privacy, people can only read what the user posts. If it is something they don't want to share it would make absolutely no sense to display it in a public forum.
I am torn between missing the old days and appreciating whet new technology offers. I like being able to have an instant response. I do feel however that our children are being deprived of certain forms of communication. In the next generation will they even know what leter writing is?
Reply:I like a balance. But now that I think of it, being online is quite unhealthy with relationships. If the internet wasn't around, I would have lost contact with my partner when we broke up for the first time. That, and cellphones.
But now we're happy together, and have a gorgeous baby...so i guess it worked out alright
Reply:Anything in excess is wrong. The young want instant communication. Most older people still like to send cards and write letters, many do Myspace too.
Reply:yes, i didn't read your extra info, but my bro uses the comp just to check it and than he refreshes the page, it is boring and waste of time, and i know some people that stay on it till 5 am. its bad, well for kids because parents i mean is okay because they can keep in touch with there old buddies but kids are outta control and they meet strangers etc

What is the influence of online social networks on our youth?
it is extremely harmful for teen-aged boys and girls...
even students in graduation level get mentally disturbed with the negative effects of Internet socialising process...
youth get attached with virtual entities... create a beautiful image of the person on line and usually fall in love...
such attachments usually do not last long... and the left-alone person sometimes go in stressful life... if not in depression...
What is the influence of online social networks on our youth?
That would depend upon what interpretation "social network" has to each person - and what one had in mind when they interact upon the net.
If youth recognize that social networks can be used as a communication tool and recognise that their are connectors out there that could help them in life - then this would be a very positive communication tool for self improvement. Isn't everyone looking for that?

Why are kids getting addicted to social networks?
This is probably the best question I've seen posted!
I think there is so much negativity and lack of genuine care/support that it creates a huge hunger/fear/lack in people.
We are not designed to be alone/rejected. Social networks offer perhaps an avenue for support and comfort that is not available in the community any longer. As in the past with extended families, and communities providing support to each other. TV provides poor role models and society promotes total self interest. I'll probably get lots of thumbs down for this but it is what I think.
I think we need to bring back some old fashioned values %26amp; structures.

What exactly is behind this whole social networking craze?
I created a YUWIE profile because it pays you to do things like that. They give you the opportunity to share their income earned from advertisements.
Here's my profile:

To find out how the whole pay thing works:

As for the other sites. I have no idea what the craze is. It seems like it's just a contest to see who can get the most friends.

How should i promote my new social networking website?
i've started a website http://www.socalspaces.com and was wondering the best way to promote the site with a limited budget. Does anyone have any good practical business advice?
How should i promote my new social networking website?
If you've got a niche market, then emphasize that market. If you've got features no one else does, be sure to mention those.
But mostly...
1) Have existing content on your site, designed to be attractive to the search engines. In other words, have content ALREADY on your site that relate to your site's purpose, that might attract readers during a search on Google. For example, "Social Networking and the Job Search", "Social Networking for Business". Those are kind of generic, but you get the idea.
2) Go one step further and do some research on what the most searched for keywords are on Google and Yahoo, and brainstorm a way to come up with interesting, unique articles to relate those search terms to your site's theme.
3) Do what you're doing here on Yahoo Answers, but be more subtle about it. Spend time writing informative answers that might possibly link back to your site for more information... but make sure that what you're contributing has some value, and isn't just a link that could be accused of being spam. Better yet, put your link in your profile, and not your answer. Then make your answers so interesting that people will want to check out your profile. Do this in other discussion and newsgroups, but always as a meaningful contributor.
4) Create meaningful, interesting personal pages at...
http://blogger.com
http://360.yahoo.com
http://wordpress.com
And of course, MySpace and anything else semi-related. BUT, make each of those blogs a unique value all unto itself, not a repeat of existing material. Because once again, you don't want an empty-content site that just looks like spam. The purpose of all of these is to provide a link back to your site, but again, following that link should add to the surfer's experience.
Finally (for now)... make sure your website's software supports RSS feeds, and has the ability to auto-notify sites dedicated to maintaining searchable databases of RSS feeds.
Hmmm. If at least 10 people would be interested in this sort of thing, I might just be convinced to do an online course on the subject. Just twist my arm a little :)
Reply:You can hire someone to do it for you, there are plenty of people who will, and it doesn't cost that much, or you can learn how to do it yourself, which means becoming a computer webmaster
Reply:Throw a party and hand out/send out inexpensive postcards as the promotional material. Have fun!
Reply:Let me caution you. It's not going to be all that easy. This market is getting over-crowded too.
It's goint to take either lots of money or lots of right promotions.
All the best!

What is good software for a social networking site similar to bebo?
Similar to bebo but preferably opensource and could be used for fan profiles. For example a group of Madonna fans.

Try php-nuke:

It's not exactly what you are after, but it is a member-based portaling software and can be highly modified.

Why do you think people love social networking sites?
Humans are social animals. The major part of the human race is connected to a social network of some kind, and the network is important to have when there are changes in a persons life.
The internet is a phenomenon that is here to stay, it's how many persons stay in touch with friends and family, but also how they make contact with new persons. The social networking sites fills the function that other social gathering places fills in the real world. You can also see the same kind behavior as in the real world. Some like to "flash their friends around" and show off how popular they are and how many friends they have, others stick to a few friends that they know well and feel no need to show off.
I constantly get invitations to different "networking sites" from people that I know in one way or the other. They want me to come there so that we can "stay in touch easier" and so that I connect to their other friends. I decline. If I'm not important enough for them to take the time to write me a personal message to let me know how they are then I'm not interested in reading their blogs and what not. I guess I'm just anti-social.
Still I can understand their love for the sites since they can create the feeling of having many friends that care about them. Not saying that any of the persons on their "friends lists" really do care, but at least it creates the illusion of it.

Would you pay for a social networking site?
if they have additional cool features that benefits you, how much would you pay up to a month?
Would you pay for a social networking site?
No. Why would I when there are so many FREE social networking sites? It would be stupid to pay for one.

What is your view on social networking sites?
WHen used appropriately they are great. I have used Myspace to find some old high school friends and things like that. Myspace specifically is quickly becoming a free venue of advertsiing for everything under the sun to the 30 and under crowd, and becomming more popular with the older crowd as well. I live in a metro area and almost every locally owned business, local recording artsists, and really anything you want to find is on myspace. Artists are using it to display their work and writers are using it as well.
What needs to happen is that the kids and teens need to be much better educated about how much info is safe to give out. I think they get overly concened with who is on their friends list and this and that, but the only thing new there is the specific venue.
What is your view on social networking sites?
when used for the right reasons it's great!
it all depends what your goal is!
Reply:eh...they are okay.
Reply:I have found them to be quite disturbing in most cases.
Little boys and girls trying to be 21 and predators stalking and spammers spamming.

Have dating/personal websites become social networking sites?
Lately i have been trying to find a date useing the free personals websites and it has ended up in fraustration.
I fill in the profile like everybodyelse (man seeking woman) dating, photo, a bit about yourself and you think yup ready to go.
Not so, these websites now offer at the same time Friendship, socailising, meetings....FSM. On the face of it this seems like a good thing except if your prime interest is dating.
Now i'm not blameing anybody for something but most women when they register state that their prime interest is FSM and their secondary interest is dating, they then produce a short list of attributes that they are seeking in a man which they seem to have copied from each other and you would not say out aloud because its unrealistic.
Now back up a second we are talking about dating websites, people have come to these websites for FSM but as a date they have made themselves unapproachable, they then complain about the lack of dates!
Have dating/personal websites become social networking sites?
I am not sure about dating sites, but social networking sites are for as you say "friendship and socialising",as well as networking. Anybody over a certain age can be in these social networking sites. And they are not there for finding a date unless that is what you are looking for. Everybody is in them for different reasons. And some people don't copy others as they have a brain of their own. I am in a few of them sites and I am not looking for a date.My pages in these places are for my personal interests including that I love doing webpages.I love blogging and I love creating a page and for people to visit me via my page. I have made a few friends on these sites but am not looking for a date.So they really are there for whatever you are looking for. I am not really sure about the dating ones and whether peoples ideals are too high. But with meeting people on the internet there are more people to choose from and people possibly aim high in the hope of attracting the most illedgible people they can.Not sure, but best wishes:)

Can anyone recommendresources for learning social networking? Not MySpace- but theories and skills.?
Yeah.
You can try Facebook.
You can make a group for whatever; and people from different universities can join and you can discuss it, form conferences, etc...
You can even search for other registered users in other Universities/Professions/Colleges and send them an invitation to your group.
