I am having a social networking website built, and my developers want to know if I want it created in asp.net or php. I have tried to find differences, does anyone know which is faster and more reliable for a social networking site? My developers told me it would take them an extra month to create the site in php because asp has a lot of built in functions, so that is something to consider as well.
Thanks

Reply:To add to the last post if a user's OS is windows but still doesn't have the latest and greatest .net drivers and such it still will have problems. Microsoft is trying to rule the world. Use pearl.
Reply:It depends on your expertise. A social networking web application can be built with both. Both PHP and .NET are excellent candidates.
I would say, choose what your developers know best. It is true that ASP.NET offer lots of built in features in terms of server side controls, but keep in mind that if your developers don't know ASP.NET, it won't save them anytime. On the contrary, they will spend their time trying to learn how to use the technology.
For me, it's ASP.NET because I'm fluent in it, and it lets me build and design an application in an object oriented manner. This doesn't mean that PHP doesn't have it's advantages.
Keep in mind the hosting costs. I think PHP is easier to host. With ASP.NET you'll need a Windows OS. You'll also need to use SQL Server as your RDBMS. You should consider these costs.
Hope this helps.
Reply:First of all good question i have been confused about that too
%26amp; I agree with Neeraj Yadav
Its really handy article those who have any confusionn regarding Php Vs ASp.net(asp)
Good work!!
Reply:Answer 1 is correct. It's more a preference issue, but either will work. A month of extra development time could be quite expensive.
Answer 2 is one of those Microsoft bashers who doesn't know anything. First off, its PERL, not PEARL. And the 'S' in ASP stands for SERVER. So the ASP.net runs on the Server, not the end users operating system.
Reply:I don't think one of them is inherently more reliable than the other. If you do choose ASP.net, know that you will only be able to host that on a windows server. .NET is a Microsoft-only technology. PHP is an open source technology and can run any number of operating systems (Linux, FreeBSD, Windows etc). But, if cost and development time are issues for you then it sounds like .NET is going to be faster for your particular developers
