I guess first you have to figure out what kind of software/hardware you are going to use. Freewares..PHP MYsql..Java/ .net(Microsoft) ...
Then hire a senior consultant (an architecht) who is familiar with all these technologies and who can explain what you will need to build that you want to build..
Then hire your team with his help or you can always find somebody to do that for you.
Befor you should start hiring have a clear pictue of what you are going to build..
Lot of time is wasted in requirement gathering if the project in not fully planned and people are hired to code.

Reply:To make a social networking program takes a lot of brains. I know you don't want a generated script. You can install programs on your webserver (like WordPress is a program).
To build a social networking website takes a lot of time too. You'll need to first pick a scripting language (JSP, CF, PHP, ASP). I've coded a basic Social Networking website in PHP using MySQL databases. It's fairy simple work but it's a lot of work, a lot of functions etc. You'll need security and you'll also need to know how to keep the program stable under heavy loads (say 1,000 people login) - can you be positive the program will remain stable?
I suggest you outline your program. You'll want several modules. A search feature, a message center for each user, and so forth. If you'd like to IM me sometime I can help you brainstorm for an outline and scripting and ways to make your program run smooth, fast and stable. It will probably take you at least a month of moderate work (4-6 hrs per day) to get a usable program.
With dedication and focused, detailed work, you can surely pull it off. If you don't know anything at all about PHP or ASP etc. I suggest you start learning. PHP which is what I'm into, is very easy, but I've been at it for a few years also.

I think that with either, you have to be careful. A bit more careful than writing emails, but a bit less careful than buying things online. it all comes down to how much information you are willing to share with people. The more information you share with friends, the more info that "others" can see also. That's the case with anything, just like Facebook and MySpace.
However, it appears that Facebook has a better way of hiding info from those that are not your friends. I have clicked on people's MySpace profiles and I dont even have a MySpace account! In Facebook, you have to LOG IN FIRST. Then, they can still decide not to let you see their profile if they choose to.
The benefits? It's the lazy man's way of keeping in touch with people you know casually and wouldnt otherwise call or email. You can see up to date pics of them, if they choose to share them. You can see a phone number change, and email address change, their current occupation, their other friends, etc. without even having to request it from them or them having to send out a broadcast email to all their friends.
Also, you can get back in touch with people you haven't seen in years! Which is what I have done so easily through Facebook, considering I have lived in 5 diff states and 2 diff countries!
It's good to take the pros from it and stay away from the cons. Be smart and safe, and you'll enjoy it!

I'm part of an organization that has had many members over the years and I'm looking for a way to set up a website that will allow all members to create profiles, upload photos, etc. and immediately link up with one another. We're talking a lot of resources to run a package like that in it's purest form. If you wanted to build a framework and offer up cookie cutter pages, you could do that rather easily with Apache, MySQL and PHP pages.

I have intelligent single professionals interested in starting a social group. What should be expressed in writing for the foundation to get started? Should we have a mission statement? UK Government Plans To Monitor Social Networking Sites And Forums...?
There was a small piece in today's Metro or London Lite (not sure which) about Government plans to set up a new department which will be tasked specifically with monitoring internet websites such as Facebook and other social networking sites (this one will probably be included) in order to 'ascertain what people are saying' and to adjust policy accordingly. Can anyone find me a link? And, do you think this is a good idea, or another sinister move? Would you feel comfortable giving your honest views on Government if you knew the Government where actually reading them and compiling data based on your views?

We have a debate activity in one of our classes and I was assigned in the affirmative side. The resolution is: The University of the Philippines administration should ban and filter social networking sites in all its campuses. I am hoping someone could help me defend this resolution.

If you can create websites or blogs and can type, you can make online money online easily. You may make money by publishing Google Adsense on your websites. If you have a website or a web-blog, you could make money by publishing advertisements on your site (by google). If someone clicks on those ads, you will earn money. If you don't have a website, you may start creating web-blogs like blogger.com (mostly free) with advertisements (google ads) on it. Some free websites don't allow you to publish google adsense because they are doing it themself.

What do you think of a social networking site that only utilizes a person's picture with no other information.
I am looking for people's opinions. I have friends who have created a social networking site called At First Pic. People provide their pix with no other information. THey would like me to invest and be a partner. DO you believe this idea is safer, as it provides less details than other dating sites and that is also more intriguing and mysterious. Other friends I have asked are mixed or do not have any opinions. There are a lot of social sites; Yahoo Personals, e-harmony, etc. How does this idea sound to you?

im looking for some social networking software with all the facilities you would expect including ability for members to upload videos, photos, music etc.
Ive been looking about and there seems to be a fair few options including free ones which appear to be just as good as the ones you pay for. Does anyone have any experience of which ones are best?
it is important to me that it is fully customisable with no encrypted code eg : in php etc that i can add to and adjust/?

This software is very complete, especially the one called the mixer, but it cost $1000.00 for this one, and it cannot be customized. The seller said they only issue 35 of the mixer software. I just looked at the demo, and is very cool. I read some reviews, that the presales support is excellent and the after sales support is terrible. There is a cheaper version of the software, maybe cost about $600.00, which can be customized, of course the customization is extra. This software got everything that the mixer has. The only difference is the mixer has a fancier flash graphic. There is another one that follows myspace format. Use your own judgement please, this is just my opinion, because this software is a dating software, with the combine power of myspace, you tube, and something called 3D city, which is very neat. I purchased the dating site, but I don't install all the features, because my hosting plan is not powerful enough. Bad support, but I think the product is good.
For Youtube, there is a software Youtube Video Site in a Box, on Ebay, cost $4.99. Just try to do a search on item#200217649339, or the seller id is info-store. I don't know if the software is good or not, because I have not bought it. It is supposed to create a code to bring any youtube video you are interested in to your website, with a simple click.

right, so i've been a victim of falling for all these social networking sites e.g. bebo, myspace etc. Does anybody agree with me that these sites are just an utter waste of time and effort, especially as it can sometimes lead to obsession with certain members of the public and often takes up half of your life! It especially takes the piss out of the less popular people as they become jealous and upset with other users.

Am I the only one that hates social networking, i mean the only people that do it are people that have no friends and need some perverted old man to comfort them.
I was on myspace until about a month ago when i realised, the time i have been spending on myspace could have been spent going out and meeting real people. I now am 5 more good friends the wiser since leaving myspace.

My partner's and I have recently invested in a server, and are creating a small, but unique social networking idea that will be initially a local system for local members of nearby schools.
Furthermore, in the short future, once the site is online and up, I intend to create a Business Plan and look for angel investors.
I was wondering, since everything will be going public and everything will be revealed in a business plan, is it normal for people to patent such ideas before anything is public or has been presented? Or is it impossible to patent the features of a website?
If this is all possbible, do any of you have any idea of the realistic price I would be paying, and how long the approval turnaround is for such a thing?
Please share your thoughts, and ideas, as I would love to understand and execute this properly.

This might not help you too much, but I only use social networking sites (both facebook and myspace) to keep in touch with people I've met. Most of my friends are from college but its always exciting to find and reconnect with friends from high school and earlier too. Because I use these sites to connect with friends, I believe the members I connect with are 100% credible. I've met them and know them, and they aren't trying to sell me on something.

I have also net nannied his computer but i have to admit some of the stuff he has received has been unsuitable .
Kids are very clever these days and much more technically advanced than my generation .
I always go through his history and check and pull him if there is anything unsuitable .
Social networking sites can be good but a whole different world can opened up if kids bypass the restrictions that are there to protect them .

Not being Parents for a start. I always love the answer well they have to have it don't they. Ever heard of the word NO. so please don't respond with that answer because mine will be "grow a pair".

Ther parent should take care, that they won´t be misused
Reply:There is no real need for kids to use these sites, but many will want to because all their friends do. I think children under a certain age - say 13 or 14 - shouldn't be allowed to use them. Those that do should be strongly monitored and their parents should make sure their profiles are completely private and any contacts are people they actually know, not strangers they have met over the internet.

You will need to know other technologies as well, particularly the server-side stuff. On top of that you're going to need to be good with databases - and being _good_ with databases is a whole lot different from say, "knowing a bit of Access"...
I'd say as a bare minimum you'd need to know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL - and that's as the _minimum_.
For information on these languages, simply search the net for FAQs and tutorials.
